WW1 L3 & L4 - What 'Spark' Ignited WW1?
Lesson 1:
- A starter to illustrate the purpose of a spark in starting events.
- An introduction to WW1 with a quote from Blackadder. Students will need to correct the mistake in it at the end of the lesson.
- An overview of the problems in the Balkans, the ethnic make up of Austrai Hungary, who Franz Ferdinand was, and who the Black Hand were.
- A video from YouTube that tells of the main events, and questions to be answered on the worksheets.
- A chance for students to correct the mis-quote.
- A plenary to do a short article reporting the death of Franz Ferdinand and anticipating upcoming events.
Lesson 2:
- A card sort activity to put each step towards war in the correct order. E.g. Russia moving troops, Germany declaring war etc.
- An activity on the worksheet to complete the 'road to war'.
- A writing exercise to consider what started the War, whether it was the death of Franz Ferdinand or one of the MAIN causes.
- A plenary source task.
