This lesson contains:

  • An introduction to the Children's Crusade of 1212 with two quotes from historians describing it as sad and miserable. the students can guess at what may have happened to go so wrong.
  • A task to study the Crusade by looking at both stories, of Nicholas and of Stephen. They read both stories from the information sheet and answer questions from the board in their books. This is staggered so they do one story at a time.
  • An activity to then compare common features in both stories. There are lots of comparisons which students will pick up on, which allows a judgement that they might have been the same, if not just folk stories.
  • A final task to study the statements in a grid and colour-code evidence that it might have been real vs evidence that it might not have been a real crusade. Students then make a judgement in their books.
