Crusades L3 - Why Did People Join the Crusades?

This lesson contains:

  • A starter 'do it now' which can be edited as you like.
  • An overview on the board to introduce the calling of the crusade by Urban II and to remind students that it began in 1096. The students then study a small part of the speech on the board and consider the power of the message.
  • An activity to to read a part of Urban's speech and analyse the language being used to convince the Crusaders.
  • A final activity to study a series of sources/statments on the information sheet and have students catorgarise them into money, religion, power and other. The students complete this table in their books.
  • A plenary to consider what it might be like going on the journey, what they would take and how they might feel.
