Crusades L3 - Why Did People Join the Crusades?

This lesson contains:
A starter 'do it now' which can be edited as you like.
An overview on the board to introduce the calling of the crusade by Urban II and to remind students that it began in 1096. The students then study a small part of the speech on the board and consider the power of the message.
An activity to to read a part of Urban's speech and analyse the language being used to convince the Crusaders.
A final activity to study a series of sources/statments on the information sheet and have students catorgarise them into money, religion, power and other. The students complete this table in their books.
A plenary to consider what it might be like going on the journey, what they would take and how they might feel.
